The Harris couple only founded their small whiskey distillery in Virginia in 2009. The state is considered the birthplace of American whiskey and Catoctin Creek follows this tradition: old production methods as well as locally grown and organic rye are used and distilled in Pot Still stills. The company name is derived from the Native American term Kittocton, which means 'place of many deer'. For this Distiller's Edition, only one of ten casks from the Catoctin Creek warehouse is bottled as a single cask.

Catoctin Creek Distilling Company was founded in 2009 as the first legal distillery in Loudoun County since before Prohibition. In early 2021, the couple invested one million dollars in expansions, such as a new Still as well as Mash Tun and a new fermentation tank.
