Pikesville Straight Rye is one of the few Maryland Rye Whiskeys that survived Prohibition in the USA. It is made from a mash of 51% rye, 39% corn and 10% malted barley.

The Heaven Hill distillery is relativity young for a big Whiskey distillery. It was founded two years after the prohibition ended. In 1935 the Old Heavenhill Springs was founded by a group of investors and the Shapira brothers. It was a great risk to invest in such a business and hard times lay ahead for the Heaven Hill distillery.

85/100 Da kann es nur Lob geben, für diesen gelungenen Whiskey. Ein großes Spektrum an Geruch und Geschmack. Lange mit der Nase dran bleiben, lohnt sich, ist ein "Entfalter".
Aroma: süß-würzig, Rosine, Zimt, Orange, etwas Vanille und Karamell, etwas Tabak und Leder
Geschmack: Rye, alkohollastig (nimmt viel weg), Pfeffer, Tabak, Bitterschokolade, Kirsche - mit etwas Wasser sofort weicher und süffiger
Abgang: Gewürze, Bitterschokolade, leichte Schwefelnoten, am längsten bleiben Karamell und Rosine - mit etwas Wasser süßer und subjektiv angenehmer

Kommentar: Dieser Whisky hat mich wirklich überrascht. Hatte grade einen Preis gewonnen als ich ihn mir geholt habe, also waren meine erwartungen recht hoch. Und es fing erstmal nicht so vielversprechend an. Man hat die typischen, ryelastigen Boubon-Noten. Aber dann kommen wirklich untypische Noten dazu: Es wird floral, man bekommt noten von grünem tee. Der whisky wird trockener und herber. Süße und herbe wechseln sich schön ab. Es wird auch nussig. Wirklich vielschichtig. Aber diese grüne-Tee Note hatte ich so noch nie in einem Rye, was ihn für mich einfach genial macht....
