The Pogues is an Irish folk-punk band formed over 30 years ago. Their music inspired John O'Connel, the owner of West Cork. In addition to a Blend, there is now also a Single Malt in honour of the Pogues. Classically Irish, it is triple distilled and malty.

The West Cork Distillery is located, as the name suggests, in the west of Cork in Ireland. In 2003, the distillery was established by three childhood friends without the prospect of much success. But the distillery turned out better than expected: today, more than 100 people, most of them from Cork, work there to produce and market Whiskeys, Gins and Vodka.

Kommentar: ein Whiskey nicht für jedermann. Erstens mal, nein, die Pogues waren keine Folk-Punker. Das war eine Erfindung der Journalisten der 80er, weil sie nicht wußten wo die Band einzuordnen war. Punk war in ihrer Musik gar nix. Punk war höchstens das, alkoholbedingte, Verhalten ihres wunderbaren Sängers Shane MacGowan, der seinen Alkoholexzessen leider Tribut zollen mußte und sich Ende November 2023 aufmachte das Whiskey Shangri-La zu entdecken. Der rote Whiskey der Pogues ist eigenartig. Ich hab nun schon einige getrunken, aber der sticht raus. Nicht unbedingt als der beste, aber der eigenartigste ist er bisher. Nussig ist er definitiv, aber auch nicht so wie man sich das normalerweise vorstellt. Ich würde den gerne beschreiben, aber rate lieber zu einem Tasting. Er schmeckt garantiert wie kein zweiter den ich getrunken habe. Nicht billig, nicht edel, eben...The Pogues, besonders.
